'Athletes need to be focused'

Javelin champion Sunette Viljoen said young athletes must not pay the price for ASA’s problems.

CAPE TOWN – It is important for Athletics South Africa (ASA) to deal with their boardroom issues so young athletes do not pay the price, South African javelin champion Sunette Viljoen said on Friday.

Speaking shortly after she won her javelin event at the South African Senior Championship in Coetzenburg, Stellenbosch, she said athletes need to remain focused.

The athletics body is battling with boardroom issues regarding the presidency of James Evans.

“I would like to see the face of South African athletics change in the future. I think the most important thing is that you have passion in your heart and keep on training and not be distracted by all of the things on the side,” Viljoen added.
