JOHANNESBURG - Long-standing friend to former South African president Nelson Mandela has wished him a speedy recovery.
Madiba was admitted to an undisclosed hospital on Wednesday evening, after suffering a recurrence of pneumonia, the presidency said on Saturday.
The 94-year-old was also treated for a complication that affected his breathing - but is now "comfortable".
Doctors said fluid in-between his lungs and ribs had built up, causing a pleural effusion.
Madiba’s friend and renowned lawyer George Bizos said the elderly statesman had fought health battles before.
"I wish him well. I know that he has come out of quite serious illnesses before.”
The presidency has not provided an update on Mandela’s condition today or been able to say when he will be discharged.
African Union Commission chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has also added her voice to a wave of well-wishers.
She said Madiba has millions of people across the globe praying for him.
“Today, as we are celebrating Easter Sunday, our prayers go to Tata… we wish him all the best.”
