JOHANNESBURG - The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God said a new pastor was appointed to run its church in Zola, Soweto after the previous pastor was arrested for rape.

The trainee pastor was arrested almost two weeks ago for allegedly raping a 29-year-old woman three times in a locked room at the church.

Some community members said raised concerns about the safety of women and some indicated they wanted the church to be closed down.

The church's Nametso Mofokeng said they took immediate action against the man and were willing to assist the police with the investigation.

"We made every effort to make sure the church is a safe place. We investigated him after the allegations and decided to release him from his duties."

The pastor will apply for bail at the end of the month.
