CAPE TOWN - A 64-year-old man has died after a fire in Philippi in Cape Town gutted his shack and left 11 other people displaced.

Disaster Risk Management says Khaweza Nontsele was unable to escape the burning shack in time.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon at the Brown's Farm Informal Settlement.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says the causes are being investigated.

“Our disaster response teams will be offering assistance to the family during the cause of the day.”

In January, three people died and over 4,000 others were displaced during shack fires in Khayelitsha and Du Noon.
