CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant on Monday asked police to investigate an illegal school in the Zwelitsha informal settlement in Khayelitsha.

Disgruntled community members set up the school several weeks ago.

This after dozens of children allegedly could not be placed in formal schools in the area.

Grant said the illegal school is not conducive to teaching or learning.

He said the parents of some 60 learners were informed the institution was operating illegally.

But community members have ignored the department’s warnings.

The MEC said when he visited the unlawful school on Monday, he found a boy trying to teach other children.

He has now opened a case at a local police station.

Grant added schools have been found in the Khayelitsha area for around 138 children who could not be placed last month.
