JOHANNESBURG - Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has praised Bafana Bafana, despite the team being knocked out of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament at the weekend.

South Africa lost 3 - 1 in penalties against Mali at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, ending hopes of the team progressing to the semifinals.

Mbalula said Bafana clearly dominated the game.

“Even on that lamentable Saturday evening, in which we lost on penalties, we were the better side.”

He added Bafana's performance restored the nation's confidence in the team.

“Bafana Bafana lifted themselves from their boot straps. Their performance marked improvement and incrementally restored the nation’s confidence and belief in them.”
