NEW YORK - South African soprano Pretty Yende is wowing audiences in New York with her debut series of performances at the Metropolitan Opera.
The singer stars as countess Adele in Gioachino Rossini's Le comte Ory - a coveted role she was invited to take on by the revered institution.
Yende, who hails from Piet Retief but received musical training in Cape Town, has been receiving great applause and rave reviews for her performances; she told Eyewitness New s it was a dream come true.
"So many great singers have been here and I get to share that at the age of 27 - it's such a blessing."
She took on the role to replace Nino Machaidze - who fell ill - and learnt the opera in only 11 days.
"I'm very grateful to have had the courage and the drive to actually do it."
Yende has only one more show this month, but hopes to be back at the Met soon.
