jOHANNESBURG - Two people where on Thursday killed in an accident on Oxford Road, near Rosebank, police confirmed.

The driver has been named as Areff Haffjee (32), while the passenger is said to be a police officer.

It is understood the crash, which involved just one car, happened during the early hours of Thursday morning.

The scene was later filled with innocent bystanders who stopped to see what happened.

The Audi R8 was apparently travelling down Oxford Road between 4am and 5am when it collided with a tree, leaving a mangled mess.

The exact details of what happened before the crash were not immediately clear.

Family members had started to arrive at the scene to see if they could identify the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transport will on Thursday announce the official road death toll for 2012.

Last week, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said about 1,300 people had been killed on South Africa's roads over the festive season.

During December 2011, more than 1,700 deaths were reported, and the figure for 2012 is expected to be similar or higher.

RTMC spokesperson Ashref Ismail said the fatalities were still due to bad behaviour on the roads.
