SANDTON - Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula on Wednesday urged Bafana Bafana to fight like soldiers in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (Afcon).

"You must go to the field and fight… if you lose, that is your baby to nurse, but you've got our support.

“You must score goals,” he added.

Mbalula was speaking in Sandton at the launch of the 10 day countdown to the African soccer tournament.

His message to Bafana was clear.

“Go and do us proud. We release you to go and compete with the best in the world.

“Go and show them that we are not tjatjarag, but at the same time show that we can kick ass!”

The minister encouraged fans to buy tickets to the games and to support the national team unconditionally.

Mbalula also asked South Africans to show Ubuntu to soccer lovers from other Africans who will visit the country to attend matches.

Afcon will kick off on 19 January at the National Stadium in Johannesburg, where the hosts will take on Cape Verde.
