JOHANNESBURG - The Pretoria Art Museum believes that Sunday's R15 million robbery was committed by members of an organised crime syndicate.

Irreplaceable works by several renowned South African artists, including Gerard Sekoto, Irma Stern, JH Pierneef and Maggie Laubser, were taken.

Three men - two said to be in their 20s and the other in his 50s - held workers at the museum at gunpoint, after paying at the entrance as legitimate art viewers.

It is said they had a list of specific paintings they were after.

The museum's Daywood Khan says the men made sure they were alone before the robbery took place.

He says staff at the museum was told to lie on the ground before their hands were tied behind them.

No arrests had yet been made by 6AM on Monday.
