JOHANNESBURG – At least two trucks have been torched in Germiston on Gauteng’s East Rand on Thursday.

Authorities believe the incidents are once again linked to the ongoing truck driver strike, which started last week Tuesday.

A third truck was also attacked and torched in Roodekop.

Three people had to be rushed to hospital after the truck they were travelling in was petrol bombed.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said officers are monitoring the area.

“We had 18 people who sustained injuries and responded to 22 truck-related incidents, which does not include today’s attacks. So if we add the recent attacks, we now have 25 incidents.”

NO WAGE DEAL

The Road Freight Employers' Association (RFEA) said talks with striking transport unions broke down on Thursday afternoon.

Truck drivers are demanding a 12 percent wage increase.

The industrial action has been marred by violence and several trucks have been set alight in both Gauteng and the Western Cape.

The RFEA said an agreement was reached on Wednesday, but the unions rejected the wage offer after consulting with their members.

RFEA spokesperson Phenwell Lunga said they are now considering taking legal action against workers.

“The workers wanted a double digit increase. They came to the negotiating table and asked for 10 percent. We agreed to give them the 10 percent. In exchange for that, we had agreed that it was going to be a three-year agreement.”
