JOHANNESBURG - Industrial action by truck drivers appeared to cause massive disruptions on Johannesburg’s East Rand on Tuesday.

Ekurhuleni metro police said a truck was set alight, causing a massive back up near the R21-R24 split.

Police spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the truck was torched at the intersection of Andre Greyvensteyn and Pretoria Road.

He said no injuries were reported and traffic officials were dispatched to the area to deal with the back up in traffic.

“A truck was set alight by a group of more than 10 people. Motorists are advised to avoid Andre Greyvensten road as it has been closed off to traffic.”

A motorist who drove past the scene said trucks were making u-turns on the highway.

“Trucks were making u-turns on the highway towards Pretoria. Even taxis and cars were driving on the verge of the road. It is ridiculous and chaotic.”

Truck drivers are on a wage strike to demand higher wages from their employers.
