JOHANNESBURG – Soweto resident Thulani Madondo has been named as one of the 10 finalists for CNN's Hero of the Year Award.

Madondo said his nomination is a big boost for the children of Kliptown.

He is the chairperson of the Kliptown Youth Programme, which runs an after-school care centre for about 400 poor children.

At his centre, children are provided with meals and are given help with their homework, particularly in maths, science and English.

Each of the top 10 nominees will receive awards of around R400,000, while the ultimate winner gets around R2 million.

Madondo said the money the organisation has already received is a dream come true.
“That kind of exposure will help our organisation find resources like leadership development and other things.”
