JOHANNESBURG - The cash-in-transit sector signed a wage agreement on Friday, ending their strike.
This is as the Road Freight Employers’ Association (RFEA) continued its negotiations with transport unions to end the truck drivers strike.
On Friday, the Motor Transport Workers’ Union (MTWU) signed a wage agreement with the RFEA, ending fears of a cash shortage as cash-in-transit drivers will be returning to work next week.
Truck drivers have been on strike since Monday to demand a wage increase of 12 percent per year for the next two years.
Negotiations began again on Friday after coming to a deadlock on Tuesday.
RFEA spokesperson Magretia Brown-Engelbrecht said, “The cash-in-transit workers signed the agreement which is similar to their demands. The offer was proposed to the unions last week before the strike.”
Earlier, certain parts of Cape Town and Johannesburg experienced cash shortages.
The Banking Association of South Africa said it was not all parts of South Africa that were affected.
The association said consumers have to look around for ATMs that have been recharged.
