Malungelo Booi | 26 September 2012 CAPE TOWN - Two incidents of vigilante killings were reported in Khayelitsha on Wednesday. The community took the law into their own hands by stoning one man to death and setting the other alight. In the first incident, a 26-year-old man from the Harare informal settlement was stoned and beaten to death for allegedly stealing a cellphone. His suspected accomplice, a 28-year-old man was also stoned, before being torched. The police's Frederick van Wyk said suspects have been arrested in connection with one of the killings. “It is believed that a group of community members assaulted the 26-year-old who died as a result of his injuries. It is also alleged that they caught him while he was breaking into a house, but this will only be confirmed after the investigation has been finalised.” “Police found the body of the 28-year-old man who is believed to have been set alight and died as a result of his injuries. No arrests have been made. We would like to urge the community to come forward with any information regarding the incident and what transpired before the victim was set alight.” (Edited by Tamsin Wort)
