CAPE TOWN - The South African Navy on Monday welcomed three foreign warships into the Simon's Town Harbour.

The vessels travelled 4,000 sea miles from South America and are from Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.

Three 11 gun salutes marked the arrival.

Rear Admiral Hanno Teuteberg said the navy has planned multinational naval exercises during September and October.

“We want to ensure that the ships from these countries are combat ready, for variety of scenarios.”

He said there will be a battle exercise at sea.

“We’re going to do normal combat exercises at sea."

Teuteberg said they are also planning a hostage simulation exercise with Special Forces from all participating countries.

The exercises will continue until October 9.
