JOHANNESBURG – Rescue personnel on Monday continued with their search for an illegal miner trapped in an old shaft in Roodepoort.

The miner has been trapped underground at the West Rand mine since last week.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said rescue workers covered a distance of three kilometres underground.

The operation had to be suspended on Friday due to rockfall.

Mulaudzi said the trapped man entered the shaft with three others through an unused shaft that had been cordoned off.

He said three illegal miners managed to get to the surface unharmed.
