CAPE TOWN - The first of the apartheid-era street names in Gugulethu will be renamed Steve Biko Drive.

Monday’s name change marks the launch of a renaming campaign in the Cape Town township.

The ‘Name your hood Campaign’ will invite the public to suggest names for 91 streets and several neighbourhoods in Gugulethu.

City officials say the public consultation process could take several months to complete and will cost the city around R800,000.

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille says, “Today is a very historic day for the City of Cape Town. We are launching the campaign to replace the old native yards, by renaming the NY1 after Steve Bantu Biko.”
