JOHANNESBURG - Striking workers at top platinum producer Anglo American Platinum on Wednesday dispersed from the company's main smelter plant in Rustenburg and headed for surrounding shafts.

Hundreds of people gathered at the plant to demand that colleagues who reported for duty down tools and join their strike.

More than 6,000 Anglo workers went on strike calling for a basic wage of at least R12,500.

The strike was organised in solidarity with Lonmin Marikana workers.

The strike committee said the mine agreed to halt all operations at the smelter plant from 10pm on Wednesday evening.

In exchange, the committee allowed workers that were inside the shafts to finish their shifts and go home.

The committee's Evans Ramokga said miners from the surrounding shafts will gather in front of the smelter again to ensure nobody reports for the night shift.

The committee then left for Lonmin's Marikana Mine to plan a joint strike by employees from both companies, starting on Thursday.
