Gauteng Health MEC seeks bailout

JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Health MEC is due to meet Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on Tuesday to ask for a bailout.

Hope Papo, who was appointed during an executive council reshuffle in July, said there was a lack of funding in some of the province’s hospitals.

He said his department had to use a large portion of its 2011/2012 budget to pay bills which had accumulated over years or risk having some services suspended.

“If we didn’t pay those [debts], there was going to be a halt in almost all services in most of our hospitals.”

The lack of equipment, safety and medication in hospitals has hogged headlines in recent months.

Papo says another problem is the large number of critical vacancies still open at hospitals.
