JOHANESSBURG - Orlando Pirates on Monday unveiled Former Bidvest Wits mentor Roger de Sa as its new head coach.

He signed a three-year deal with the Soweto Giants and replaces veteran coach Augusto Palacios, who steps down due to "health reasons".

Palacios had surgery on his spin recently and has not been able to continue with his duties.

He has been under immense pressure following his side’s poor showing in the MTN8, after the champions were knocked out by Moroka Swallows.

Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza said the team has faith that de Sa.

“I’m happy to announce a South African coach and an ex-player. I hope that he’s ready for the task. I think he’s got all the necessary experience.”

Khoza said Palacios will be redeployed as soon as he is back on his feet again.

“He’ll still be part of Orlando Pirates, depending on his condition. We’ll make an announcement at the appropriate time.”
