JOHANNESBURG - Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane on Wednesday warned former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema and others about interfering in wage disputes at mines.

He said politicians will have to face the consequences of their “inflammatory statements”.

Malema and the African People’s Convention President Themba Godi visited Lonmin's Marikana Mine and encouraged workers to make the industry "ungovernable".

This is after workers at the mine downed tools over pay.

At least 44 people were killed during the week-long violence.

Chabane said those who are not part of negotiations between unions and the mine management should not get involved.

“They are not workers and they go to the striking employees and issue all kinds of threatening statements. They must face the consequences of what they say.”

Chabane is leading the inter-ministerial committee that was established by President Jacob Zuma to probe the events that led to a police shooting on August 16, resulting in 34 deaths.
