CAPE TOWN - A global animal welfare consultant is urging South Africans to keep a close eye on their dogs after at least 30 were smuggled across the border into Namibia on Saturday.
Police have arrested two Angolan nationals believed to be part of a syndicate.
Local government officials gave the consultant permission and police support to go into Namibia to save the canines.
Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Boer Bulls reportedly fetch high prices on the Angolan market.
Animal consultant Mariette Hopley said, “If you’re an owner of this kind of dog, please keep them within in the confines of your premises. Don’t let the dog wander around and make sure that the security on your premises is up to date.”
