FOURWAYS - Police are gathering evidence at the scene of a crash following Wednesday morning's dramatic shootout and car chase in Fourways, north of Johannesburg.

One suspect was arrested while three remain at large.

Police recovered three firearms in their getaway car.

Crime scene investigators dusted off the blue BMW for fingerprints while their colleagues gathered other evidence at the scene.

Security guards have cornered off a section of the parking lot near entrance one of the mall.

It is understood the car chase began at Fourways Mall after the gang allegedlybroke into the iStore.

They fled the mall, but were chased by police at which point a shootout ensued.

The suspects then crashed into a minibus taxi, forcing them to flee on foot, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale .

Helicopters and members of a police dog unit assisted in trying to help those that got away.

No injuries were reported.

Traffic was heavily backed up on William Nicole Drive, in the direction of Diepsloot.

In April, at least eight men hijacked a Checkers supermarket at the Leaping Frog Shopping Centre situated a few metres down the road from the Fourways Mall.
