CAPE TOWN - Mayor Patricia de Lille on Wednesday called for an investigation into a tender governing the development of the Athlone power station.

The plant was was partially decommissioned in 2003, but the facility still houses equipment used for the transmission of electricity.

She made the comments after the ANC questioned the city's commitment to clean governance.

The ANC contends the tender awarded to Aurecon is flawed.

The party claims the company had an unfair advantage as it was the firm hired to compile the tender document, the feasibility study and cost estimates.

The ANC is now calling for the contract to be investigated.

It also called for Cape Town Deputy Mayor Ian Nielsen to be sacked from his post.

The Congress of the South African Trade Union (Cosatu) also wants Nielsen removed as it believes the city’s finances have steadily deteriorated under his leadership.
