CAPE TOWN/JOHANNESBURG: Snowfall and heavy rain is being reported on Tuesday morning in many areas across the country.

Cape Town has again been hard hit with heavy rains resulting in flooding and road closures in certain areas.

The inclement weather is expected to remain for the most of this week.

However, forecaster Carlton Fielies said the cold front responsible has already passed over the mother city..

“The southerly and south-easterly winds expected for today is going to bring in the cold air, putting Cape Town’s temperature in the mid-teens.  However, the winds will pass.”

Meanwhile Western Cape Disaster Management said the Voortrekker Bridge in Montague has been closed due to flooding.

The Swartberg Pass between Prins Albert and Oudtshoorn is closed to traffic, following heavy snowfall as well.

Disaster Management's Colin Diener said the road to Ashton is also becoming a problem due to heavy rains.

“There are some vehicles in trouble in the Ashton area, we are responding with ambulances from the province.”

At the same time, the Swartberg Pass between Oudtshoorn and Prins Albert has also been closed to traffic.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said: “There’s also heavy snow fall on the N1, however, it has not been closed yet. We would like to urge our motorists to be very cautious on the N1 because of the heavy snow fall, and not to take any chances.”

GAUTENG

Snow has fallen in the Vaal, West Rand and in certain parts of Johannesburg.

Witnesses said light snowflakes were falling in Illovo, Parktown and Auckland Park in Johannesburg.

Weather service said the cold front sweeping over the country will soon be gone.

Temperatures plummeted on Monday night but forecasters said it will start warming up by Thursday.
