Sports minister glows with pride
Fikile Mbalula has congratulated Proteas cricketer Hashim Amla and golfing legend Ernie Els.
CAPE TOWN - Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said today was is a bright Monday for South Africa.
He congratulated Proteas cricketer Hashim Amla and golfing legend Ernie Els.
Amla notched up 311 not out in the first test against England, the highest score by a Proteas batsman, while Els won the coveted British Open Championship.
Mbalula said he is smiling from ear to ear.
“It is really great news for our country, and this is a victory for the people of South Africa. It is something we have been longing for and it has come at the right time.”
He said the two achievements will further boost the morale of the South African Olympics Team.
“Our country is on the map. We’re going to the Olympics, pumped up and jacked up.”
Mbalula said it wasn't a mistake to make Amla sportsman of the year in 2011.
“That speaks to the growth, determination, integrity and teamwork he has shown through sport. The spirit of the Proteas is pumped up.”
