Nelson Mandela Day 2012
Wise, gentle and charming, yet an astute statesman and leader in South Africa’s liberation, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela celebrates his 94th birthday on 18 July 2012 and with that the world marks its third Mandela Day.
What is Mandela Day?
The United Nations declared Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009, meant to recognise Madiba’s sacrifices towards a democratic South Africa and the 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. Since then – through the efforts of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Foundation and its organisations, this day has grown into an international campaign where people are encouraged give up 67 minutes of their time, to be of service to either their local communities or a chosen charity group.
Ultimately, today serves as a call to action, for people everywhere to take responsibility for the world and like Madiba, work towards making it a better place one step at a time.
