JOHANNESBURG – The proposed retrenchment of 285 workers is not linked to ongoing wage negotiations, the South African Breweries (SAB) said on Saturday.

According to the liquor manufacturer, it is implementing the next phase of its capability programme introduced in March.

The plan will apparently ensure that the right skills and resources are incorporated into the business.

SAB's Robyn Chalmers said, “285 people, mainly from support functions, may have to be retrenched. At the same time, we expect to create about 152 new positions, mainly in sales.”

“We are a little concerned that FAWU (Food and Allied Workers’ Union) is trying to link the retrenchments to the annual wage negotiations.”

The retrenchment process should be complete by September.

Fawu's Moleko Phakedi said, “It’s quite unbelievable. In the context of a growing business like SAB, we weren’t anticipating that they would be contemplating retrenching our members.”
