CAPE TOWN - Several roads in the Eastern Cape remain closed, but police and traffic officials say efforts to remove vehicles stuck in snow are yielding positive results.

Areas which include Kleinskool, Salt Lake, Missionvale, Motherwell and Wells Estate were affected by snowfall and heavy floods.

Police spokesperson John Fobian said more than 100 people and several cars were rescued on the road between Cradock and Graaff- Reinet on Sunday.

Lootsberg Pass was cleared.

Some vehicles and two trucks are still stuck on the road. The trucks will be removed by heavy machinery once the snow melts, said Fobian.

Cars are being removed with tractors and 4X4s.

Meanwhile, residents who were affected by flooding in the Eastern Cape are being accommodated in local halls.
