JOHANNESBURG - Mpumalanga police confirmed that 19 people have been killed and scores more injured in a crash between a truck and a goods train on Friday morning.
Information about what caused the accident is still vague and rescue workers are at the crash site along the N4 between Malelane and Hectorspruit.
The police's Joseph Mabusa said: “A goods train collided with a truck that was trying to cross the line. The truck was carrying people to work.”
Netcare 911's Jeff Wicks said some of the people injured are in a critical condition.
“19 people were killed and 25 other were injured, four of them quite critically. A truck carrying farm workers was struck by a train on a level crossing near Hectorspruit in Mpumalanga.”
“The truck was cleaved in two and was flung from the railway line,” said Wicks.
Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the injured lying amongst the dead.”
A woman at the scene said: “You can smell blood. There are bodies everywhere. It’s a very gruesome sight.”
She said the workers on the truck appear to be fruit pickers.
The driver seems to have survived the crash.
