JOHANNESBURG - Controversial Gauteng Housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi has resigned, the ANC said in a statement on Wednesday.
In a surprise move, he announced he regretted the decisions made with regard to some personal purchases made using the departmental credit card.
Allegations were also levelled against him publicly, relating to the misuse of an official vehicle, as well as his previous work at the Mogale City Local Municipality.
Mmemezi maintains that some allegations against him are false.
The ANC’s Dumisa Ntuli said, “He has resigned as the MEC effective from today [Wednesday]. The party has accepted his resignation.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance's (DA) Jack Bloom said the issue is not over.
“There needs to be proper accountability. The DA will continue to push for an investigation into all his alleged misdeeds."
Bloom said if any wrongdoing is found, Mmemezi should face criminal action.
“We cannot have this syndrome where people resign and all the allegations against them go away.”
