JOHANNESBURG - Police arrested a woman on Wednesday on charges related to the kidnapping of a two-year-old girl from Jeppestown, Johannesburg.
Asanda Twala disappeared while being taken to the shops by a family friend near her home in June.
On Tuesday afternoon, the girl was returned to her parents without any ransom being paid, said police spokesperson Katlego Mogale.
The kidnapper initially demanded R15, 000.
Mogale said the suspect attempted to catch a taxi when she noticed police were pursuing her.
The 23-year-old suspect is being charged with kidnapping, said Mogale.
However, Mogale would not confirm whether the suspect was the former girlfriend to Twala’s father.
Twala's uncle received a phone call from an unknown person on Tuesday, telling him to inform the girl’s father that she was downstairs and the family should fetch her, police said.
