THOHOYANDOU - Limpopo police used water cannons to disperse violent demonstrators at an African National Congress (ANC) centenary lecture delivered by President Jacob Zuma.

Tuesday’s event was marred by violence both inside and outside the venue, but officials managed to control the crowds.

Groups of armed officers wearing berets chased the demonstrators away from the venue as police used water cannons.

The protestors were singing anti-Zuma songs while the president delivered his speech inside the church.

One member said the ANC's National Executive Committee was led by "dictators", referring to Zuma and ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe.

The event was tense from the beginning.

Earlier, a fight broke out when Zuma’s detractors sang the infamous ‘change’ song.
