JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Correctional Services said Government's efforts to rehabilitate convicted prisoners will be in vain without the active participation of the general public.
The department concluded a 10-week special remission process on Friday, when it released the last group of more than 43, 000 inmates.
At least 43 of those released committed more crimes and were re-arrested.
Spokesperson for correctional services Mahlodi Moufhe said crime was a societal issue. “Let us all play a part in ensuring that we assist our children to live a productive life.”
In April, President Jacob Zuma announced a six-month remission to all prisoners and a further 12 months to inmates convicted for non-violent crimes to commemorate Freedom Day.
