PRETORIA - Police are tracking thieves who made off with 70 grenades stolen from a delivery bakkie at a petrol station on the N1 North highway near Hammanskraal, Pretoria.
The explosive cargo was being delivered from a Cape Town-based Denel subsidiary to the Wallmansthal Military Base.
A police officer on the scene told Eyewitness News they were hunting for thieves who stole two crates containing 35 grenades each.
The officer said the driver and his assistant arrived at the filling station at about 5AM but decided to take a nap as they could only make the delivery at 8AM.
He said while the pair was sleeping, thieves stole soap from a cargo lorry parked nearby before cutting open the box on the back of their bakkie.
The thieves stole three crates, but one was recovered in a nearby field.
The police's dog unit is on scene.
