JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police confirmed on Monday that an officer was strangled by two inmates in the Katlehong Police cells on the East Rand.

The warrant officer was responding to a noise inside the cell on Sunday night when the two Mozambican men overpowered him and strangled him with a blanket.

The police's Noxolo Kweza said the two fled on foot and are currently at large.

“The two prisoners were in the cells for hijacking. They had been identified in an ID parade for hijacking.”
