JOHANNESBURG - The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) will on Sunday continue with its investigation into an aircraft crash at the Klerksdorp Air Show, following the death of a pilot.

Investigators started to gather information shortly after the light machine crashed and burst into flames on Saturday.

Brian Eminess, a commentator at the North West province air show, said the crash happened as the pilot attempted an aerial maneuver.

“[The pilot] Gianfranco Cicogna lost formation and flew straight into the ground. The aircraft then exploded.”

Cicogna had flown extensively in both Africa and Europe.

Meanwhile, spokesperson for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Siphiwe Dlamini sought to clarify that the L-39 Albatross did not belong to the national force.

“It’s not our aircraft, we were not part of that air show.”

Dlamini was responding to media reports describing the aircraft as a SANDF Viper.
