MIDRAND - South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Blade Nzimande said on Thursday strategic companies like Sasol and Accelor Mittal must be nationalised.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the African National Congress’ (ANC) National Policy conference in Midrand.

However, Nzimande said the communist party does not support the kind of nationalisation that was being advocated by the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL).

He said the state should have a stronger role in the mining sector.

“It does not mean that nationalisation is something that needs to be thrown out of the window.

“We believe Sasol and Accelor Mittal must be nationalised because those are very critical national assets.”

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma took a break from the debates at the conference and instead interacted with the business community.

He was touring an exhibition centre set up by the progressive business forum.

Zuma walked into the exhibition centre amid a media frenzy.

Flanked my ANC Treasurer General Matthews Phosa, Zuma spoke to exhibitors.

Companies present include Emirates Airlines, Absa Bank and vehicle company Tata.

Business will be closely watching developments at the policy conference as company CEOs are hoping for certainties on economy.

Earlier this week, Zuma spoke about a shift in economic transformation.
