ORANJEVILLE - Rescue services were called in on Monday after heavy storms tore through most parts of the eastern Free State.

Many people were left homeless.

The strong winds and heavy rains started on Friday and intensified over the weekend.

Paramedics reported eight dead after buildings and structures fell on them.

Informal settlements and structures in Oranjeville, Welkom, Kessel, Reitz and Bloemfontein were destroyed.

iWitness Bianca Strydom sent us these photos of the devastation in the Oranjeville area.
