CAPE TOWN - The DA said it has laid criminal charges against the ANC Youth League Deputy President Ronald Lamola.

This follows his comments on land reform.

It says Lamola's statement - which comes at a time when a high number of violent crimes are taking place in Mpumalanga - cannot be tolerated.

Lamola last week called for the expropriation of land without compensation stating that South Africa needs an expropriation act that is “more forceful than war.”

Speaking on The Kieno Kammies Show on Monday morning, the DA's Mpumalanga leader Anthony Benadie said: “This is a blatant incitement to violence and on Sunday morning we went down to the police station in Middleburg, Mpumalanga and we have laid formal charges against Lamola for incitement to violence as well as intimidation.”

League spokesperson Magdalene Moonsamy said “this is still a society that is highly divided by race, ” in reaction to Benadie.

After being interrupted on air, Moonsamy then hung up the phone.

In 2008, Cabinet approved a bill that would speed up its land reform programme. It was aimed at transferring 30 percent of farmland to black people by 2014.

White farmers argue that government wants to buy their prime land at reduced market prices.

Land reform is expected to be addressed at the ANC's policy conference this week.
