JOHANNESBURG - The Free State ANC elective conference will continue in Parys on Saturday, despite problems in two of its five regions.

Its leader Ace Magashule appeared to strongly back President Jacob Zuma in his opening address to the gathering on Friday.

The conference was delayed three times since last month and is now taking place just days before the ANC's National Policy Conference.

Meanwhile, two of the five provincial regions have not held their regional conferences yet.

Earlier in June, ANC members from the Free State protested outside Luthuli House in Johannesburg, urging national leaders to solve gripes in their province.

Members claimed that party structures were being manipulated.

Magashule told delegates on Friday that whilst the ANC is divided, members need to work towards unity.

ANC members are divided on who should lead the ruling party.

Magashule also hit out at claims that the expulsion of former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema could be reviewed at the party’s elective conference in December.

The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) earlier this month made a decision to not review Malema’s expulsion.

Zuma is due to speak on Sunday, the final day of the Free State gathering.
