CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Education Department says it will not tolerate violence on, or near, school property.

Rival gangs opened fire on each other on Thursday, just metres away from Crystal High School in Hanover Park.

Many learners traumatised by the incident have since received counselling.

Crystal High Governing Body spokesperson Maureen Asvoel is worried about the impact this latest incident will have on exams.

“We are very unhappy. Parents need to be called in because learners feel they are unsafe because of gangsters entering [school grounds]. [Learners feel as though] they’ve been targeted.”
