PRETORIA - Former National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele on Wednesday bid a fond farewell to his subordinates.

He said he would love to return to the police force.

Speaking at a National Press Club briefing in Pretoria, Cele said crime levels were reduced under his leadership.

“In the two years, we succeeded in removing crime from the agenda of the Cabinet lekotla and as a subject of discussion by terrified and despondent South Africans.”

But Cele also hit out at those he claims orchestrated his downfall.

The colourful former commissioner accused ministers and Judge Jake Moloi for leading a conspiracy against him.

“Someone must have prevailed upon Moloi to make sure he returns recommendation that said I must be fired, at whatever cost.”

Late in 2011, President Jacob Zuma appointed Moloi to head an inquiry looking into Cele’s fitness to hold office.

This after Cele and former Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde were implicated in a damning report on the police headquarters deal.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s probe revealed that officials acted improperly in the procurement process of the Durban and Pretoria properties.

Meanwhile, the ousted cop will launch a court challenge against Moloi’s findings in the North Gauteng High Court later this week.

He wants Tuesday’s decision to fire him declared invalid and unlawful.
