CAPE TOWN - A Bellville police reservist on Monday appeared in court for allegedly raping a homeless man.

The officer was taken into custody at the weekend.

Investigators say the destitute man was looking for shelter at the Bellville police station on Saturday, when the reservist allegedly handcuffed him and then assaulted him.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate's Moses Dlamini said, “The investigation is ongoing and the matter has been postponed to June 21 for a formal bail application.”

Meanwhile, the head of the South African Police Union (Sapu) has condemned the alleged rape.

Sapu's Mpho Nkwinika said, “It is terrible. We as the South African Police Union want to say that we do not condone such acts.”

He also called for a full investigation into the matter.

When Eyewitness News called Western Cape Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer for comment, he replied that he would only respond once he had all the facts.
