JOHANNESBURG - Emergency Management Services (EMS) said a suspected criminal was on Saturday assaulted and set alight by residents in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.

The man was in a police van when residents overpowered the officers and pulled him out of the vehicle, spokesperson for the EMS Synock Matobako said.

Paramedics said it was unclear what crime the man was arrested for.

He was rushed to Tembisa Hospital in the East Rand.

The patient suffered first degree burns all over his body. It was not clear what was used to burn him, Matobako added.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Tshisikawe Ndou said no arrests have yet been made.

He said a case of attempted murder is being probed.
