JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana interim coach Steve Komphela on Tuesday said he would grab the opportunity to mentor the team on a full time basis if he was given the opportunity.

The South African Football Association (Safa) appointed him as temporary head coach after firing Pitso Mosimane on Monday, following a string of poor results.

Mosimane was appointed to the position after the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

He was in charge of 16 matches and managed to win six.

Bafana's weekend draw to Ethiopia saw many football supporters calling for Mosimane’s head as it was the first qualifier for the 2014 World Cup.

Komphela will be responsible for the team's Botswana and Gabon games in June.

He said while he would not put his hand up, but he was willing to fill the position.

“This job is of high pressure. A man’s hair turns grey just now. To me, this is a national duty. South Africa must elect me to the job. I cannot appoint myself.”

Coaching the national team is a hard task, Komphela added.

“One needs to bear in mind that this is a public position. You are just given the unique honour and privilege to be the face. I’m not driving it. I’m just representing the country.”

Meanwhile, Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund cut his China trip short to return home.

He is seen as a possible candidate to take over as Bafana head coach.
