Facebook may open site to under-13s

Some under 13s are already manipulating Facebook's log-on.

CAPE TOWN – Some under 13s were already manipulating Facebook's log-on to access the site, a technology expert said on Monday.

TechCentral's Craig Wilson was reacting to reports that the social networking site was apparently considering opening up the site to kids younger than 13.

Facebook currently has a cut-off age.

Experts said the move would probably boost Facebook's user numbers and increase its revenue stream.

But Wilson said kids were creative and able to bypass some of the settings.

“Facebook’s only verification for age is that is asks you to select your birth year from a drop down menu. So you’ve got a great number of children, who are actually already on the service, having simply lied on the application.”
