JOHANNESBURG - South Africans gathered at the Nelson Mandela Square on Tuesday to record a Happy Birthday video for former president Nelson Mandela.

The initiative by LeadSA seen a collaboration between the Department of Basic Education, SHOUT, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Brand SA and Proudly South African.

Several hundred excited locals sang in unity and honour of Madiba’s  94th birthday.

Over 2000 people arrived in their South African colours, waving the flag and showcasing how Madiba has always been able to unify the nation.

Ministers of Basic Education and Home Affairs, Angie Motshekga and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, were among the well wishers.

They thanked those who braved the crisp morning chill to sing their hearts out for the international icon.

“It was a proud moment for me to see so many South Africans gathering together and singing Happy Birthday to Madiba,” Panyaza Lesufi, spokesperson to the Basic Education Minister, said.

“The video recording will be released on 18 June, a month before Madiba’s birthday, to create excitement and to rally the nation to sing Happy Birthday at 8am sharp on Mandela Day,” said LeadSA activist, Yusuf Abramjee.

“We want to thank each and every South African for taking up the call to action and adding their voices and faces to this recording. It was a memorable moment,” he added.

LeadSA announced the initiative will also be calling on countries around the world to participate in singing happy birthday to Mandela on 18 July, and aimed to get over 94 countries to participate.
