JOHANNESBURG - As more countries are asking Syrian diplomats to leave, South Africa said it remained supportive of "mediation" efforts in Syria.

Japan and Turkey are the latest countries to expel Syrian diplomats following similar moves by several western nations including the US, France and Germany.

This is being done to protest the massacre in Houla over the weekend where more than 100 people, mostly women and children were killed.

South Africa said while it condemned the violence, there was no reason to change the relationship it has with Syria.

“We have been critical of the response of the Syrian government to the legitimate demands of the Syrian people for reform and we support the mediation efforts of the special envoy Mr Kofi Annan,” said International Relations' Clayson Monyela .
